World No. 1 Chris Bak and Teammate Christine Cavallo Remain Undefeated at US Trials

Last weekend in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USRowing held a combined trials, speed order and national championship regatta. The trials component aimed to decide the composition of its junior national team, adaptive boats and senior mixed quad. The speed order was the second of two regattas held this year to help determine the “Olympic” boats (the senior men’s and women’s solos, and the senior mixed double). And national championships was for senior and master’s rowers that aren’t fighting for a spot in at this year’s worlds.

The U.S. first held beach sprint trials in Sarasota, Florida, back in June 2021. In the five years since, the location of the annual trials regatta has shifted, and this year, a single trials regatta was replaced by speed order regattas . But the one constant throughout has been Chris Bak, who remains undefeated in the men’s solo in all seven of the trials or speed order regattas held to date.

Credit, too, should go to Christine Cavallo in the women’s solo. Cavallo didn’t attend trials in 2021 or 2022, although she was part of the mixed quad that won bronze at the Oeiras 2021 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals. But since 2023, she has the same perfect record at home as teammate Bak, and both seem likely to represent Team USA in the solos this year at worlds in Qingdao, China.

Note that we’ve also updated our World Rankings with new and missing data over the last week, which has seen Bak jump up into top spot. On the women’s side, Cavallo is at No. 12, but with strong competition from Audrey Boersen (7) and Sera Busse (20).
