Rankings System
The Wild Rowing Rankings don’t intend to accurately predict the outcome of beach sprint regattas, but instead to understand who are the key athletes to watch based on recent participation and results. The system is designed to be relatively simple, and is explained below:
To be included, regattas must have taken place in the previous year, noting that only one annual edition of each regatta will be included (and in some cases a regatta may be included though it took place, say, 11 or 12 months ago).
Only the Olympic disciplines (senior men’s solos, women’s solos and mixed doubles) count towards this ranking. Junior and masters events, and other boat types, are not included.
Each discipline within each included regatta is assigned a total point value depending on the number of participating nations (or teams that may be considered equivalent to national teams). The point values are:
- 1000: World championships
- 600: Continental championships
- 500: Races with a minimum of 20 national teams
- 400: Races with a minimum of 15 national teams
- 300: Races with a minimum of 10 national teams
- 200: Races with a minimum of 5 national teams
- 100: Races with a minimum of 2 national teams
Participants within each discipline then gain a number of points relative to their finishing place in the race. The distribution is:
- 1st Place: 100%
- 2nd Place: 80%
- 3rd Place: 60%
- 4th Place: 40%
- Eliminated in Quarterfinals: 20%
- Eliminated in Knockout Round: 10%
- Eliminated in Time Trials: 5%
If an athlete does not finish the final time trial in a race, they are treated as if they did not compete, and gain no points.
In the case of a regatta being cancelled after the time trial, the top four places will gain half the points that they would have gained if the full regatta was completed, and all other places will only gain the 5% for being eliminated in time trials.
For the overall rankings, the five best results (in points value) of each athlete are considered. These five points values are then added together, and the athletes are ranked according to total points.
The men’s and women’s rankings in the mixed double are worked out separately, without considering the teammate of each athlete. In that respect they are individual, not team, rankings.
Data Sources
The data used in these rankings is taken from the following regattas. Note that the initial rankings date from the 2025 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals. Subsequent rankings, following the 2026 world championships, will aim to include the most recent edition of each regatta.
Only regattas that can be considered “international” are included (in most cases, this means that national championships do not count). Some regattas that most likely should be included are not in this list simply because the results of those regattas aren’t publicly available online, or are significantly incomplete.
If a regatta is missing from this list and you believe that is an error, or if you notice mistakes in the spelling of names or assignation of which nation a rower competes for, please contact us.
