The inaugural Belarusian Beach Sprint National Championship took place on a beach in the western city of Brest in the middle of August. Belarus is land-locked and so its only option for beach sprint regattas is on rivers or lakes. The regatta marked a revived interest in beach sprint in the country.
Berlarusian rowers have only once competed at the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals and never at the European Championships. After a lone junior men’s double raced at Oeiras 2022—setting the third best mark in the time trial, but failing to start in the knockout stages—the country supported Russia’s 2022 escalation of its war against Ukraine, and was subsequently banned from all international competitions by World Rowing.
The sport’s global governing body has begun to shift its stance over recent months, and will now allow Belarusian, and Russian, athletes to compete as neutrals (without displaying their flag or playing their national anthem).
