World Rowing and the IOC Confirm LA28 Beach Sprint Qualification System

The official Olympic qualification system for beach sprint will allocate a maximum of one place for male athletes and one for female from each country. In theory both rowers would compete in the solos and in the mixed double, as long as an athlete from the opposite gender also qualifies.

The qualification priority is given first to the mixed doubles, and then to the solos. This means that the first 12 of the total of 64 athletes (counting both men and women) will qualify in the mixed double competition at the 2027 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals, followed by a further 18 in the same discipline at continental qualification regattas. World Rowing will then look back to the results of the solos competition at worlds in 2027 to allocate six more places to both men and women, and next the same disciplines at the continental events to assign nine more places each. Finally, one male and one female place will be available to the USA, as host country, plus one more universality place to each gender.

Key consequences from this system include the fact that while the men’s and women’s solos should reach the maximum of 32 participants, there is a high chance that the mixed doubles will not (i.e., if the 32 men don’t come from exactly the same countries as the 32 women). Additionally, athletes in qualification regattas will be earning a place for their country rather than personally for themselves. That could be especially important if a country’s results in qualification regattas are good enough to gain places in both the doubles and solos. Coaches could be forced to make a difficult decision as to who gets to go to LA28.
