The biggest conclusion to draw from the first two stages of the 2026 Filippi Lido Trophy is probably that one of the toughest challenges in beach sprint is finding compatibility between the growing number of regatas on the calendar. Outside of the all-but obligatory international appointments of the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals and continental championships, rowers and their federations currently have to pick and choose which races to attend, and even the Filippi Trophy might lose out in that competition.
After two rounds, the current leader in the women’s solo is Lithuania’s Raminta Morkunaite, with 25 points. Morkunaite won at the second stage in Fano, but had been knocked out in the quarterfinals by Spain’s Teresa Díaz in Mondello. Díaz, and the rest of her Spanish team, were absent in Fano because it conflicted with Spanish beach sprint trials. And Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig, who won in Mondello, was also away, rowing on flat water for the World Team at the Lenny Peters Cup in the USA. Lobnig now sits tied for second place in the Filippi Trophy rankings with Italy’s Federica Cesarini on 20 points. Cesarini was second in Mondello, but was knocked out in the quarterfinals by teammate Maria Elena Zerboni in Fano.
Similar stories can be seen across the men’s solos, mixed doubles and under-19 competitions. The rower with the most dominant position so far, a lead of 12 points against his closest competitor is the Czech Republic’s Lukas Krizek. After picking up second place in the under-19 men’s solo in Mondello and winning in Fano, Krizek has a total of 35 points and breathing room ahead of Italy’s Andrea Sciavicco.
The Filippi Trophy will return in two weeks time, in Bacoli, Naples, from 8 to 10 May, but so will the conflict of choosing which race to compete in. That same weekend will be the second round of the Spanish beach sprint league (also sponsored by Filippi), the Dutch Harder Beach Sprints and, although Italy would be a long journey from the Southern Hemisphere, even New Zealand’s beach sprint trials.
